Founded over 220 years ago, the National Library of Luxembourg opened the new single site Bibliotheque nationale in Kirchberg in October 2019.

The architecturally impressive building in the northeast capital of the Grand Duchy is a remarkable full service facility spread over three storeys; in addition to it’s 1.8 million printed volumes the library gives access to 614,000 ebooks and numerous audio-visual resources and scientific research titles. As a cultural heritage site the BnL also houses professional standard training and conference spaces as well as an impressive exhibition hall regularly hosts a diverse range of exhibitions and events.

The sustainable and energy efficient BnL has a bold geometric design which continues inside, use of exposed concrete and metalworks requires specialized acoustic control to ensure the space fulfils the peaceful and comfortable sound experience expected from a library.

Polylam Acoustic baffles designed and built by Durlum continue the elegant aesthetic created by the subtle mix of pale timber, white walls, and bold metallic fittings. The straight vertical slatted Polylam in matte white powder coating give a linear design ceiling which adapts perfectly to its modern and at the same time homely environment.

The slats were delivered to site fully formed in exact sizes and ready for a perfect invisible fix installation have L6 acoustic perforation; 2mm diameter perforations at 4mm centres, giving 25% open area, to the long edges leaving the base facing edge clear. The baffles also have an acoustic fleece filling to maximise the acoustic properties.
